Original plans called for an advanced 16-bit system which would function as a full-fledged computer with a keyboard and floppy disk drive, but Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi rejected this and instead decided to go for a cheaper, more conventional cartridge-based game console as he felt that features such as keyboards and disks were intimidating to non-technophiles.

It was judged the second greatest console behind the Sega Dreamcast in PC Magazine's "Top 10 Video Game Consoles of All Time".įollowing a series of arcade game successes in the early 1980s, Nintendo made plans to create a cartridge-based console called the Famicom, which is short for Family Computer. In 2009, the Nintendo Entertainment System was named the single greatest video game console in history by IGN, in a list of 25. It was succeeded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
With the NES, Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party developers, authorizing them to produce and distribute titles for Nintendo's platform. The best-selling gaming console of its time, the NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983. In South Korea, it was known as the Hyundai Comboy. It was initially released in Japan as the Family Computer (also known by the portmanteau abbreviation Famicom) on July 15, 1983, and was later released in North America during 1985, in Europe during 19, and Australia in 1987. Sooooo pissed those went away on the WiiU.The Nintendo Entertainment System (commonly abbreviated as NES) is an 8-bit home video game console that was developed and manufactured by Nintendo. Hell, I even have the adapter for the Wii to plug my original NES controller into the Game Cube slot. But for now, what works best for him, and what I've been hoping for since the Wii has come true. Who knows, maybe my kid'll like the Classic Controller down the road. I can easily plow through SMB3 with an NES controller, but how i have to hold my hand with the Classic Controller just doesn't feel the same and I'm at a disadvantage. I've tried playing NES games with the Wiimote sideways, the Classic controller, and the WiiU Gamepad. Personal preference is a major factor in this. In comparison, the NES controller fits perfectly. Whether or not it's pointless depends on the person.Īgain, harking back to my son for this one too: the Classic Controller or whatever I got with my Wii is okay, but with the extra buttons and the ergonomic shape, it's difficult for him to hold right now. Not because I want to use the NES controller over the other options, but because the option is there to begin with. I do own a few of them already on the VC, but it just feels like a more complete package and a great snapshot of most of what made the NES so much fun.
But if I can reiterate my original post, this allows me to have my son play good, classic games without the reliance on severely obsolete technology, ontop of not having to dish out ~$150 if i were to get them all through the VC. I would not have gone out of my way to purchase a lot of these games. I haven't bought much on Virtual Console, so this is a good chance for me to save some money. You have interest in ALL of them!?Īs impossible as it might sound, yes, I do.

Plus HD pixels.pixels the size of CATS!!! I'm excited for this just for the fact of having a decent lineup, having a new NES Controller that can be used with the Wii/WiiU, and just the fact I won't have to rely on my 30+ yr old NES to survive another version of me during those fun early years of gaming and frustration. It will come with the following 30 games installed: It will also be bundled with a HDMI cable, and an updated variant of the NES controller that appears to have the same plug that will allow it to be used with a Wiimote as well. Nintendo is making a mini version of the NES that is coming preloaded with 30 games from the NES era.
